The aim of this paper is to place the application area of data warehousing in the context of a middleware environment provided by the CORBA standard. In order to handle a data warehouse on distributed heterogeneous database platforms a neutral description of an integrated multidimensional conceptual schema is needed on a meta-level. Such a description is the essential part of the more general data warehouse metadata repository. To understand the notion and the central function of repositories a short history of metadata systems is given, including an outline of modern interface-centric repositories used in CORBA and likewise in COM. The CORBA repository is a keystone to overcome technical as well as application heterogeneity. Based on this technology a multidimensional interface-centric repository is specified.
