Effect of Task-Difficulty on Human Attentional Blink between Visual and Auditory Systems in the Calculation Processing

Under the real-world circumstances, a human is compelled to process the plural information presented to the human sensory modalities at the same time. In previous investigations, this problem was treated as the human attentional blink in the multiple task performance of the single modality. Although the investigations of the multiple task performance between the modalities were also performed, the detail of the mutual interference across the modalities has not been clarified. In this study, authors measured the human multiple task performance between the visual and the auditory modalities using the mental arithmetic problems as both of the visual and the auditory stimuli. The results showed that the mutual interference between the modalities was depended on the task difficulty of the visual and the auditory stimuli. The results also showed the possibility of the interference originating the central processing owned by both the visual and the auditory modalities. These results are significant to clarify the mechanisms of human information processing under the real-world circumstances.
