This paper proposes two identification methods, based on the Variable Structure (VS) theory, to deal with the parameter identification for continuous-time nonlinear systems. The first one is dedicated to nonlinear systems for which the state is not completely available for measurement. The parameter identifier is designed in combination with the VS observer and takes into account some properties of the VS theory. Moreover, the considered systems may be unstable in open-loop operations. The second one, called the Identifier-Observer-Controller Design (IOCD), is a robust VS controller in combination with a VS observer using output measurements and with a parameter identification law. Parameter identifiability and convergence of the closed-loop signals are analyzed. In order to illustrate the theoretical aspects, the proposed methodology is carried out through numerical simulations on an academic example.
