Virtual Engineering and Process Control Applied to the Metallurgical Industry

The production of metals from raw materials involves a host of thermophysical processes characterized by high temperature, high pressure, hostile and often corrosive environment, making it difficult, costly and even risky to try to design or optimize them by experimentation and trial-and-eror alone. Yet on this depend the quality of the product, the productivity of the process and its ecological impacts, in other words, the viability of the process itself. An alternative is to use virtual means to design and optimize the process and its control prior to plant implementation. In this short article, which in fact is an extended abstract, we discuss virtual engineering using mathematical models, and apply it to the design of a magnesium refining furnace. We also discuss process control studies by virtual means, using virtual controllers acting on virtual processes, prior to transferring the results onto the real process. An aluminum casting furnace is used as illustration for virtual process control.
