There are considerable power generation problems in the United States and other countries. Some experts are forecasting a difficult year for power utilities and a future beset with problems, mostly revolving around greatly increased demand. It appears as though there are many short term and long term optimization problems that the power industry must address. They must plan for future demand while trying not to go broke in the short term. One tool that can help in both the day-to-day running of a power plant, and the long term planning by managers and politicians, is the new simulation optimization computer approach to multivariate problems. It is called multi stage Monte Carlo optimization. It will be used here to solve a complex electric power purchase problem. Then its generality and power will be shown by using multi stage to solve a nonlinear system of equations. Additionally other applications for this flexible technique will be mentioned.
