Pyrolytic characteristics of some biomass materials and influence of biomass ingredients

In this study, some biomass samples such as almond shell, walnut shell, hazelnut shell, rapeseed, and tobacco waste were subjected to slow pyrolysis process. Major biomass ingredients such as hemicellulose, holocelulose (hemicellulose + cellulose), lignin, and extractive-free bulk of these biomass samples were analytically isolated. Pyrolytic properties of the original biomass samples and the isolated biomass ingredients were investigated and compared. Pyrolysis experiments were carried out using thermogravimetric method under dynamic nitrogen atmosphere of 40 mL/min. Temperature was increased from ambient to 1073 K with a heating rate of 20 K/min. Derivative thermogravimetric analysis (DTG) curves of the samples were derived. The results of this study showed that cellulosics and hemicelluloses were the major source of the volatile products during pyrolysis, whereas lignin contents of the samples contributed mainly to the solid char. The yields and distributions of the pyrolysis products were a function of these ingredients, and they also controlled the time required for the completion of the whole pyrolysis process.
