This paper discusses the testing and evaluation of the electrical and related properties of shape Memory Alloy Wires (Nickel titanium base alloy) used in Active Shape Control of Aerofoils. The SMA phase transformation related electrical properties, their co-relation with mechanical properties and the use of the SMA as sensors is explained. The tests that are required to evaluate SMA's which are essentially low voltage and high current devices are discussed. The design features of the power sources required to work in a close loop control mode such as programmability (through an IBM PC) and remote load drive capabilities is also explained. The electrical property dependent factors including response characteristics that influence the selection of the SMA wire and efficiency related issues are also dealt with.
