Low temperatures and intense precipitation resulted in a very high consumption of de-icingrnsalt in many parts of Germany. Sometimes, salt suppliers were not able to fulfil therndemand for de-icing salt. In order to assess and evaluate demand for salt more accuratelyrnin the future, the Federal Highway Research Institute was commissioned to develop a newrnmodel approach. The starting point is daily data of more than 500 stations of thernmeteorological measurement network of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (GermanrnMeteorological Service) The meteorological data are used to derive possible types ofrnslipperiness (snow, ice, slippery frost) and assigned to a possible average salting scenario.rnConsumption of salt can be calculated from the road network around a measurementrnstation when the surface area is known. Applications of the first model approach results inrna rough estimation of salt consumption even for short periods (days) and different roadrnnetworks.
