The performance of a PEMFC fed with H_2 + 1% CO in the anodic side and oxygen from air in the cathodic compartment has been investigated. The oxidation of H_2 in the presence of CO has been performed using a nanostructured core-shell material (Au@Pt/C). By using anodic stripping voltammetry, the onset potential of CO-desorption on Au@Pt/C has been determined and compared with that obtained on Pt/C. CO oxidation starts 30 mV less positive on Au@Pt/C than on Pt/C; this indicates that the bond strength between CO-Pt is weaker on Au@Pt/C than in Pt/C. The PEMFC performance using hydrogen polluted with 1% of CO (10psi) in the anodic side and oxygen from air (10psi) in the cathodic compartment presents a maximum power density of 49 mW/cm when Au@Pt/C is used as catalyst; this value is larger than the 46 mW/cm~2 achieved with Pt/C under same operating conditions.
