On January 1, 1999, United Water began the nation's largest public-private partnership agreement for water operations -- a 20-year agreement with the City of Atlanta. United Water Services Atlanta (UWSA) operates and maintains the city's two water treatment plants - Hemphill and Chattahoochee - as well as 12 water system storage tanks, 7 zone-transfer pumping stations, approximately 21,000 fire hydrants, and a 2,400-mile network of water distribution mains.rnWith the responsibility of maintaining the 2,400-mile network of distribution mains, and the recognition that much of the system is constructed from cast iron pipe with early sections dating back over 100 years to late 1800's, UWSA is proposing to use Trenchless Technology on approximately 5,000 feet of pipe to monitor and ascertain the practicality, effectiveness and economies of the use of this technology in the Atlanta area.rnThis paper will discuss pipe bursting as method to replace existing water lines and installing new ductile iron pipe.
