摘要

Farm mechanization helps in effective utilization of inputs to increase the productivity of land and labour. Besides it helps in reducing the drudgery in farm operations. The early agricultural mechanization in China was greatly influenced by the technological development in Western countries. Irrigation pumps, tillage equipment, chaff cutters, tractors and threshers were gradually introduced for farm mechanization. As a result, the related agricultural machinery industry has received an unprecedented good opportunity for its development along with the ever-increasing prominent position of agriculture in China. The demand for agriculture is showing rigid growth in industries like agriculture, forestry, livestock breeding, fishery and agricultural product processing. The advanced foreign machinery, new technology and up-to date information have received extensive favourable attention in the country. This thesis examines the experience of a major American-based machinery manufacturer, John Deere & Company in China and how the changing structure of Chinese agriculture and government policy toward the agricultural machinery necessities appear to offer evidence of a growing market for farm machinery in China. Through the case study of John Deere, I identify specific issues that should be considered when conducting business in China and challenges within this agricultural machinery market environment are discussed. Issues like Government policies and practices surrounding IPR, government relations, the legal environment, and supplier relations along with how John Deere has dealt with the challenges.
