Potential benefits of flocculant usage were investigated in hydrocyclones for mine backfill preparation from A-Ltd.'s copper-nickel mill tailings. The study was prompted by the need to reduce or eliminate the backfill deficit experienced at A-Ltd.'s Mine-X.; The tailings feed to the Mine-X Sand Plant which prepares the backfill does not remain uniform, and when its pulp density drops below 15%, solid recovery to hydrocyclone underflow falls short of meeting the backfill requirements of the mine. By adding flocculant to the tailings feed prior to the hydrocyclones, some of the fines in hydrocyclone overflow could also be captured and used for backfill as a way of compensating for recovery loss due to low tailing pulp density.; Through a series of cylinder settling and hydrocyclone tests, a variety of flocculants were examined in terms of their effectiveness for this application, and "Core Shell(TM) 71302" from Nalco was found to yield the best results. With this flocculant, it was possible to achieve solid recovery increases of up to 11% depending on the flocculant dosage employed. However, it was also noted that over-dosage of flocculant could have an adverse effect.; Addition of fines to the hydrocyclone underflow product modifies the particle size distribution of the backfill material, but some increase in the fines fraction is considered to be advantageous.; Apart from improving the solid recovery and size distribution, a further benefit was observed with the use of flocculant. Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests showed that flocculant can also significantly enhance the backfill strength. For example, a backfill prepared using a flocculant dosage of 50 g/t, a cement ratio of 30:1 and a curing time of 28 days had an 85% higher UCS value compared to that obtained without flocculant. This implies that savings could be made in cement consumption and that could further contribute to the economic viability of flocculant use for backfill preparation.
