The objective of this work was to determine the composition and structure of families from the order Coleoptera and species of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea in fragments of secondary forests. The study was conducted on two sites located within the boundaries of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez where forest fragments with mature vegetation and exotic species still remain. Sample collection was carried out for 9 months between April and December, 2005. At each site, scarabs were captured by using an ultraviolet light trap and a white light trap, six necrotraps baited with fish, six with shredded fruit and concentrated vanilla essence, and six traps baited with human feces. Abundance, richness and diversity were determined for each specific site and the general area. The structure of the functional groups for the captured beetles was established as well as the observed and expected values of both Coleoptera and Scarabaeoidea families. A similarity analysis was performed to establish specific patterns for the superfamily. Environmental variables such as temperature, relative humidity and precipitation gathered by the meteorology center at the study area are included in order to establish biotic parameters. A total of 38,126 specimens were captured, distributed in 30 families of which 27 were captured by the different traps used in this study. Of the specimenes Scarabaeoidea 2,399 were collected belonging to 14 species, distributed in 10 genera, six subfamilies and four families. Family and species diversities were captured with the light traps, while the highest number of individuals overall was obtained with the necrotraps and falling traps baited with luring substances. Diversity, abundance and calculated indexes for the families and species varied to a low degree in correlation with the sampled sites and months. High values of diversity and abundance were observed in August, when intense rain began. The composition among sites was very similar. The families Curculionidae, Nitidulidae, Staphylinidae, Scarabaeidae e Hydrophilidae with 93.2% and the species Canthochilum andyi, C. taino, C. borinquensis, Phyllophaga vandinei and P. citri with 95% were among the most abundant in the study. Most of the families captured are detritivores, herbivores and predators; 46% belong to the group herbivore-detritofages. The analysis of similarity showed a strong significant temporal pattern (R=0.66), between type classification and seasons for species like Canthochillum andyi, C. taino, C. borinquenses, Phyllophaga vandinei and Ataenius heinekeni; but no pattern was observed in the Scarabaeoidea community within the study site. The results of representation in this study demonstrated that sampling efficiency was 100%.
