An examination of a woman's life work: Laura Smith Haviland and the founding of the Raisin Institute.

Because of a lack of historical research and study, the role that women played in the development of higher education in America in the mid-1800's is unknown by many. One woman of influence in this time was Laura Smith Haviland (1808-1898). Smith Haviland founded the Raisin Institute, the first higher education institution in Michigan to admit students regardless of creed, gender or race. Through the generation of meaningful qualitative date, this study of Smith Haviland and the Raisin Institute examined the sociological factors that affected higher education in Antebellum America. This study showed that the experiences of Smith Haviland and The Raisin Institute are illustrative examples of how education and social reform were intertwined in mid-1800 America. The statistically grounded historical generalizations of the study served to enhance understanding of mid-1800's American education, particularly its ties with the Antebellum reform inclination. The results affirm that Smith Haviland was an exceptional educator who was both well aware of the issues affecting Antebellum America and also committed to her belief that access to education was essential to people regardless of their race, color or creed.
