This practicum explores the design of learning centres in academic libraries and applies this knowledge to the design of a learning centre in a public library. The process involved a literary investigation, precedent analysis, and a proposed design solution.; The literary investigation centres around the paradigm shift in libraries due to consumerism. The theory of Strategic Alignment to synchronize the library's organization and technology is discussed. Theories on features of consumer based design and learning centre design are also discussed. Five key precedents are explored. These precedents helped to inform the design solution.; The design intervention involved the main floor of the Main Branch, Ottawa Public Library. A learning centre was designed in response to the needs of the community.; The information included in this document provides interior designers with a theoretical framework to inform learning centre design as well as other civic environments that are affected by consumerism.
