Good governance and corporate social responsibility: Rhetoric to reality.

This study aimed to show that there is a relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and positive modes of development, based on the assumption that CSR is part of a nation's strategy of development in which good governance is central. Good governance is defined here to mean the ability of the state to formulate policies and effectively implement them. It also refers to the capacity of the state to create an administrative environment that encourages corporations to voluntarily embark on CSR.;This investigation was carried out in Trinidad and Tobago. It focused on two multinational corporations, KFC and BG T&T. Their operations were examined between the years 2002 and 2007 and data was collected from both primary and secondary sources. The dependent variable was good governance as measured by the existence of policies, systems of accountability, and the administrative environment. As used in this study, one independent variable was CSR, measured by select drivers of CSR such as corporate governance, principles, reputation, and profit.;Some of the key findings of this investigation were that: (i) International agendas and priorities influence those set by nation-states; (ii) In the absence of an administrative framework that regulates CSR, CSR can emerge if the government creates an enabling environment that gives corporations the freedom to choose to engage in its practice without restriction; (iii) CSR does not occur in isolation; it requires a multi-stakeholder approach and is dependent on cooperation. Cooperation is likely among actors of the global governance system; (iv) Corporations are motivated to engage in CSR in the absence of a tangible rewards and punitive system.;The key policy implications of the study are that CSR has the potential to contribute to social development. Good governance must exist in order for CSR to play a part in development. While good governance is necessary for CSR, other agents also have the potential to drive corporations to engage in CSR. The practice of CSR in Trinidad and Tobago informed the study that a multi-stakeholder approach to CSR facilitates its impact on social development.
