Supply chain management and logistics have formed an integral part of industry right from very beginning. However, only in the recent past have corporates realized the enormous benefits to be gained by merely sprucing up their supply chain and logistics. This study tries to determine the optimal scenario for ordering packaging material in a pharmaceutical warehouse setting. It addresses two ordering settings viz. inventory ordering for regular use and ordering for a product launch. The former takes place throughout the year whereas the latter occurs only once or twice a year. The study uses conventional EOQ models, non-conventional approaches as well as a combination of both. To address costs from all possible angles, the total costs include the foxed ordering cost, transportation costs and the inventory holding costs. The aim of the study is to determine which scenario yields the lowest total costs and thus the best ordering policy.
