摘要

The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between stewardship and conservation of the natural world to the degree that it exists among foxhunters in Fauquier County, Virginia. This study also sought to determine the degree to which a sense of stewardship drove those practices. It investigated the relationship between participation in conservation and stewardship's role in identity construction. Foxhunters require large tracts of open land to participate in their sport. In the face of increasing development pressure from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan suburbs, maintaining that open space has become challenging.;The study found that although foxhunters participated regularly in conservation activities, they did so as a direct response to perceived threats against their sport. Conservation easements were the most frequently used method to protect open space.
