An Applied Framework for Statistical Analysis of Spatiotemporal Data

Spatiotemporal data are increasingly prevalent, and while much academic research has focused on theory and conceptual frameworks that can help integrate space and time, there has been limited focus on an applied framework that is available for practitioners that seek to set these frameworks into action and make sense of their spatiotemporal data in ways that truly integrate the two.;The primary objectives of this research are to propose a new framework for statistical analysis of spatiotemporal data, discuss the implementation of the proposed framework to ensure it has value not only theoretically but also as an applied approach, and finally to validate the framework through interviews and quantitative evaluations. A framework is proposed with design components that include aggregation, spatiotemporal conceptualization, interpretation, and communication. Aspects of each of the design components are implemented in ArcGIS and described in detail. Finally, the applied value of the framework is assessed based on semi-structured interviews while the practicality of the implementation is assessed using a real-world, representative dataset, that includes various spatial and temporal scales.;Building on existing theory and models, the research outlines the proposed framework and shows that its implementation provides practitioners, analysts, and decision-makers with a way to analyze spatiotemporal data in an integrated, approachable way. The framework's design components allow for the implementation of a wide range of statistical, spatial, and temporal methods and algorithms, and provides valuable parameters within which to visualize, interpret, and communicate the results of such analysis.
