摘要

The goal of this dissertation was to resolve an apparent conflict in current thinking about the role of mirror neuron system (MNS) functioning in autism. The conflict involves findings that suggest a generalized mirror neuron system abnormality in autism, and findings that suggest there is preserved understanding of a specific mental state in others---understanding of other's intentionality---in autism. To resolve this conflict, two experiments examined mu wave suppression through EEG recording (power in the 8-13Hz band recorded over motor cortex), as an index of MNS activation, in a group of high functioning 9-16 year old children with ASD and a carefully matched typical control group, when they were presented with (1) actions on objects (transitive actions) and (2) body movements (intransitive actions). Children with autism showed mu suppression similar to the control group to the presentation of transitive actions but not to the presentation of intransitive actions. Moreover, mu suppression was positively related to autism symptoms severity, but not to imitation abilities and adaptive functioning, two areas specifically impaired in autism.
