The chloroplast genome sequences for an herbaceous bamboo (Cryptochloa strictiflora) and a panic grass (Microcalamus convallarioides) were used in comparative analyses with other members of the grass family (Poaceae) to generate a family-level phylogeny. Maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses were conducted to estimate the evolutionary relationships between 14 members of Poaceae. Additionally, the Cryptochloa chloroplast sequence was compared to that of Oryza sativa indica in intron, inversion, and pseudogene content, and large insertion/deletion events were noted in Cryptochloa as well. Results of these analyses suggest that the Bambusoideae subfamily of grasses (of which Cryptochloa is a representative) is moderately supported as the sister taxon to the subfamily Ehrhartoideae (of which Oryza is a representative). Other phylogenetic positions for Cryptochloa were only weakly supported. Additional characterization of the Cryptochloa chloroplast genome sequence is also discussed.
