摘要

William Christopher "W. C." Handy (1873-1958) was a cornetist and bandleader, who introduced to the world the art form that came to be known as the blues. He did not invent this art form, but commercialized it. These songs were the secular music of southern, rural African Americans, reflecting their day-to-day struggles of survival and negotiations of life's ups and downs. Handy was a businessman, who, with partner Harry H. Pace (1884-1943), founded Pace and Handy Publishing Company, incorporating in 1915 in Memphis. After the dissolution of their partnership in 1920, Handy, by now in New York, formed Handy Brothers Music Company, Inc., deriving profits from the publishing and sales of popular music.;Handy's musical interests were broader than the art form for which he was known. In addition to blues songs, he also composed art songs, arranged spirituals for solo voice and chorus, and wrote Blue Destiny, a symphony, based on blues themes, a portion of which was performed by the Cleveland Orchestra in 1947. Handy published art songs and spiritual arrangements by African American composers, as well as white composers, providing opportunities for some who had few outlets for their works to be printed and distributed.;This dissertation examines Handy's involvement in the larger musical arena---with academics, musical theater composers, classical composers and performers, and those involved in every strata of the music business. Handy used his considerable influence to provide opportunities for composers and performers, especially those of color, to aid in the propelling of their careers at a time when many doors were closed.;The document also exposes selected art songs and spiritual arrangements (all Handy publications) of six composers---Margaret Bonds, Lillian Evanti, W. C. Handy, Herbert Melts, Florence B. Price, and William Grant Still. In addition to composer profiles and song analyses, each piece is discussed in terms of its compliance with ideals and sensibilities of the Harlem Renaissance or Chicago Renaissance. Songs are also evaluated in terms of learning opportunities offered to the student of singing.
