This study examined the relationship between leader-member exchange and burnout within psychiatric rehabilitation workers. Seventy-nine psychiatric rehabilitation workers completed demographic questionnaires, Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Surveys, and Leader Member Exchange-Multidimensional Measures. A correlation analysis indicated that LMX scores are significantly and negatively correlated with burnout scores. An additional correlation analysis indicated that contribution scores are significantly and negatively correlated with burnout. A stepwise regression analysis indicated that contribution and loyalty scores combined are significantly and negatively correlated with burnout.; This studied linked LMX and burnout, thus improving member and leader relationships may positively influence burnout. Psychiatric rehabilitation organizations may be able to indirectly reduce individual and organizational problems by reducing burnout through supporting high LMX relationships. With lower rates of burnout, employees may provide more effective services for individuals with severe mental illness. With less burnout, employees may experience improved physical and psychological health. When organizations decrease burnout, they may reduce operating costs and decrease staff turnover.
