Changing gender roles and their socio-cultural implications for rural households' well-being: A study of micro-finance in Bogoso, Ghana.

摘要

This thesis is an investigation of the effects of micro-finance on gender roles, the extent to which socio-cultural factors influence the changes, what the changes in gender roles mean for well-being and the lessons for improving micro-finance policies, programs and projects, and the well-being of rural households. Case study was conducted and data were analysed with quantitative and qualitative techniques. Findings from the study indicated that micro-finance has changed men and women's control over decisions and resource allocations, which consequently affected financial responsibilities, education of children and intra-household conflicts, and these have largely contributed to well-being. However, men borrowing women's loans, their reduced resource contributions and the small size of loans could limit households' well-being and growth of the micro-finance. The study concludes that some socio-cultures promote and inhibit well-being in rural households. It recommends vigorous monitoring and evaluation of micro-finance initiatives and sensitization of beneficiaries, if their well-being matters.
