摘要

The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) regarding the socialization of China into the ASEAN normative security framework. In particular, this paper will examine if the norms-based approach emphasized by the ARF is having a positive affect on Chinese behaviour regarding regional diplomacy and militarism in the South China Sea. By comparing the empirical validity of three contrasting theoretical expectations---neo-realism, constructivism, and rational choice theory---it is possible to ascertain the success of the ARF in realizing its objectives. It will become clear that the ARF has indeed played an influential role in moderating Chinese foreign policy towards its ASEAN neighbours. Moreover, the value of the ARF can be best understood by making use of a rational choice approach to international relations.
