Distinguishing characteristics of evangelistic youth ministries in Southern Baptist churches.

The purpose of the research study was to determine whether distinguishing characteristics exist among Southern Baptist youth ministries defined as evangelistic when compared to Southern Baptist youth ministries defined as non-evangelistic. This comparison study between evangelistic and non-evangelistic youth ministries of churches affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention examined three categories of characteristics: (1) youth ministry philosophy, (2) youth evangelism perspectives, and (3) youth evangelism practices.;A survey instrument was developed through a multistage process including a survey content and format review by two subject matter experts, a two-round survey validation by an eight-person expert panel, and a pilot test performed by fifty-seven ministerial students. Two hundred thirty-two Southern Baptist churches from thirty-two states participated in the study, providing the research sample requirements for a factor analysis.;This study showed that insignificant differences in beliefs about youth evangelism existed between the evangelistic youth ministry churches and the non-evangelistic youth ministry churches while significant differences in behaviors toward youth evangelism were present between the study groups. The three factors contributing to the significant differences in behaviors toward youth evangelism were the evangelistic youth ministry churches executed an organized strategy for youth evangelism, established a community visibility of their youth ministries, and emphasized targeted evangelistic effort toward youth. These three factors supported the study hypothesis that distinguishing characteristics existed among Southern Baptist evangelistic youth ministry churches when compared to Southern Baptist non-evangelistic youth ministry churches.
