摘要

This thesis will examine Leo Strauss' interpretation of the prelude (172a-178a) and Phaedrus' speech (178a-180b) in Plato's Symposium within the context of postmodern thought. Strauss argues that he discovers in Plato a position which essentially anticipates solutions to a modern dilemma. The question is whether Strauss reads into Plato postmodern concerns and his own epistemological and ontological assumptions and thus imposes alien conceptions onto Plato or whether Strauss' interpretation of Plato's Symposium reveals the original teaching of Plato. This thesis will examine Strauss' position and in fact contends that his interpretation is controlled by the assumptions of a position foreign to both the thought and the written word of Plato's text.
