摘要

This thesis will: (1) Describe and compare two design methods: Traditional Design Methods (TDMs) and the Familiarization, Functionality and Testing Method (FFT). FFT enables novice designers to succeed in situations in which TDMs can sometimes fail, and positions them to better discover and solve root problems. (2) Detail how FFT was applied successfully during the design cycles of two medical devices. (3) Detail the creation of a learning module and teaching tool that used an existing resource and improved on how effectively it helped novice engineers more fully understand design. (4) Present two case studies that detail instances of design performed by novices. The first case study describes a failed design cycle, and discusses how FFT would have resulted in a more successful design. The second case study describes a successful design cycle and discusses why FFT resulted in success.
