摘要

The aim of this phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of adult-to-adult liver organ donors and the meaning these individuals attribute to the experience of donation. Dr. Patricia Munhall's (2001) method for phenomenological inquiry guided this study.; Six participants were recruited from the liver transplant program at a northeastern, urban, academic Medical Center. Five women and one man participated in the study. They ranged in age from 27 years to 53 years. Three of the participants donated to their spouses, one participant donated to a sister, and two participants donated to a parent.; Qualitative, in-depth semi-structured interviews were used to explore the thoughts, feelings and experiences that living donation had for these liver donors and the meaning donors attribute to the phenomena. Reflecting, writing, and rewriting to create a narrative of the essences of the donor's experience was used to analyze data via Munhall's (2001) phenomenological approach.; The study identified five themes: (1) No turning back---How do I live without you; (2) Roller Coaster Marathon; (3) Donor Network; (4) The scar; (5) Reflections---Time to think.; At the center of the experience was the donor's commitment to the recipient. Once donors started the donation process, they saw it through to the end. The process was complex and donors received varying levels of support from family, friends, health care professionals and others. Once LDLT occurred, the donor was left with a physical reminder in the form of a scar. As the donor and recipient recovered, the donor began to reflect on the meaning of being a donor.; Study participants were recruited from one transplant center. Caution should be observed before assuming that these findings are meaningful in all contexts.
