摘要

As suggested by the title, this work features a hodge-podge of ideas taken primarily from the fields of string theory and condensed matter physics. This stems largely from the fact the author has been deeply influenced by various physicists and mathematicians who continuously strive to find connections between seemingly disparate ideas in both physics and mathematics. To paraphrase Polyakov......really good ideas should be of use in many different parts of physics...and the importance of an idea ought to be measured by its degree of universality.We shall concern ourselves with three markedly different topics. At first sight, it would appear as though these topics were completely removed from each other. But, as we hope to convey to the reader, all three problems are related to each other in various ways and at different levels, the most significant one being in the spirit of their solution. In all three problems, we employ a technique where each problem is mapped onto a "dual" problem where the solution admits a particularly clear formulation. This notion of "dualizing" physics problems is of paramount importance, and not to mention, of great utility in contemporary theoretical physics.
