A study on business cycle synchronization in advanced economies---the effect of economic and political determinants.

摘要

This dissertation examines the effects of political-ideological proximity as well as fiscal policy co-ordination on the synchronization of business cycles across countries. While much literature exists which focuses on the role of economic determinants, this study’s contribution is the addition of a political dimension to the study of business cycle co-movement. For the empirical analysis, this study sampled 18 OECD countries and applied panel data regression approaches including the two-step version of the expanded GMM estimator with Windmeijer finite-sample correction to the standard errors, removing latent endogeneity bias. The model was tested in various ways for its robustness, in particular, the macro-panel data were examined for error-cross sectional independence and a principal component analysis was applied to a system GMM method. The empirical results show that in the closely linked economies, the similarity of individual country’s political ideology can take an important role in forming the stylized pattern of business cycle co-movement. Furthermore, fiscal policy co-ordination has a positive effect on business cycle correlations. The empirical analysis conducted in this study also confirms that these political and policy variables do not alter the role of existing economic variables which has been discussed in other studies.
