The Healthcare industry is characterized by its complexity in delivering care to the patients. Accordingly, healthcare organizations adopt and implement Information Technology (IT) solutions to manage complexity, improve quality of care, and transform to a fully integrated and digitized environment. Electronic Medical Records (EMR), which is generally defined as the digitized representation of the processes of patient diagnosis has become one of the most recent innovations and technological trends in healthcare industry. The development of an EMR System is one of the highest priorities among healthcare organizations around the world. However, the issues surrounding the development of a fully integrated EMR System, which is urgently required, are also the most difficult to solve. Healthcare organizations are still struggling to achieve an efficient and effective care delivery due to the failure of systems integration efforts, lack of semantic interoperability, and lack of patient-provider electronic communication.;This research utilized a systematic architecture approach to design and develop a conceptual solution for the integration of an existing EMR System with other EMR Systems and medical information systems such as Laboratory Information System (LIS). The resulted integrated system is an enhanced, interoperable, and accessible EMR System. The proposed conceptual solution has been researched and designed based upon well respected industry architectural standards and frameworks including the architectural descriptions from ISO/IEC 42010—adapted from IEEE Standard 1471-2000 in 2007—The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), and the Doctor of Management in Information Technology (DMIT) Meta-Model. The conceptual solution provided is an agile, innovative, and systematic approach to overcome the systems integration issues and challenges faced by healthcare organization.;The conceptual solution was demonstrated by developing a prototype for the enhanced EMR (EEMR) System. The prototype included two different infrastructure implementations one which is based on cloud-computing and a second with a centralized database. The prototype was evaluated against the integration and interoperability requirements identified in the conceptual solution. The prototype was able to provide immediate access to the required information, and achieve an acceptable degree of semantic interoperability.
