Wireless embedded systems are of great importance in our modern society; however, their designs are facing great challenges due to the ever-increasing complexity and shortening of time-to-market windows. This crisis cannot be solved by traditional design approaches which are ad hoc at large and depend heavily on designers' past experience, but by formal design methodologies that promote the use of pre-defined and pre-verified components, maximize the reuse of previous design results, and provide correct-by-construction techniques to avoid the expensive design-and-test iterations and thus improve design productivity. Platform-based design has emerged recently as one of such promising approaches.; This dissertation has endeavored to apply the general platform-based design principle into the wireless embedded system domain and develop a concrete design methodology. The work of this dissertation contains a complete design flow and covers major design steps for wireless embedded systems. First, the design of wireless embedded systems is inspected from a platform-based perspective, with each step in the design process defined as operations on platform instance or platform components. Then, a new UML profile is proposed to capture the design specification/requirements and represent the design flow by introducing new stereotypes specific for platforms, disciplining the use of various diagrams, and setting detailed implementation semantics. Next, following the function/architecture co-design principle, functional and architectural platforms at various levels of abstraction are developed respectively using Metropolis meta-model language. Last, issues of how to use Metropolis for design refinement, mapping and architecture exploration are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is demonstrated through both academic and industrial case study examples.
