摘要

The poorest of the poor in Belize struggle every day hustling for food, securing shelter from the rain and living in fear of abuse and violence. Their moment-to-moment attention is on survival. The daily chaos obstructs their ability to engage fully in a meaningful life. Participation is defined as "involvement in a life situation" (WHO, 2001), engagement in activities found meaningful and gratifying which contribute to a person's development. On Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the basic physiological and safety needs remain unsatisfied, impeding development toward higher order needs of self-esteem and self-actualization. How would their lives be different if one element of change, a house, was introduced?;The purpose of the study was to investigate the phenomenon of how impoverished persons perceive their lives after acquiring a safe, secure house to live in. The study explored the linkages between poverty, housing and participation. The research questions were: What is the lived experience of impoverished persons in Belize after acquiring a safe, secure house? What does participation mean to the participants within the home? What does participation mean to the participants external to the home?;Guided by a phenomenological hermeneutic design, data were collected through interviews and photovoice results from 18 recipients of a Building for Change house. Two stage semi-structured interviews were conducted in the natural environment of the participant's home. Eight women who completed both interviews also participated in photovoice sessions. A public photovoice exhibit was held at the conclusion of data collection. Data analysis was completed following the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis method (Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2011).;The results indicated the physiological and safety levels on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs were affected. A cognitive shift from survival to well-being produced greater participation internal to the house (domestic participation). Participation outside the house (social participation) was more complicated, requiring a transformation from well-being to empowerment. Social participation was recognized as important, but engagement remained limited. The participants were sustained by their faith (internal) and monthly education sessions (external). The study contributed to the growing research on the multidimensionality of poverty and social participation (Alkire, 2007; Wagle, 2005).
