The recycling of plastics used in dairy packaging is complicated by the presence of contaminants like aluminum foil, paper and food residue. The contamination has been shown to reduce the performance of the base plastic resin. It was thought that a recycling methodology could be developed to separate effectively the contaminants from the mixed plastics dairy packaging stream.; The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the properties of the dairy packaging at various levels of segregation and reprocessing. The materials which are primarily present in the mixed dairy stream are polypropylene, high impact polystyrene, high density polyethylene, foil and paper. This study mainly focuses on the reprocessing of polypropylene and high impact polystyrene.; Results showed that both materials are very recyclable in nature, and separation techniques like float sink and melt filtration are highly efficient in separation foil from the plastics mix. The study also showed that melt filtration and use of the grater mixer have little negative effect on the quality and properties of the material and, thus, it can be reprocessed again. However, the study on blends of the constituent resins indicated the need of a suitable compatibilizer since a drop in properties was observed.
