摘要

Some academics have suggested that the Heine Lieder of Schubert are unrelated songs; others have postulated that these songs are cyclic, and should be presented as such; still others suggest that the order of the songs as they appear in Schwanengesang is incorrect, and should be rearranged before presenting them as a self-contained song-cycle. These conflicting opinions create a problem for the performer aspiring to present a musically and academically accurate performance. How does the performer manage and assimilate these disjunct theories into a performance? Outlining the current divergent academic opinions surrounding Schubert's Heine Lieder, this paper attempts to meld these conflicting opinions and hypotheses into a viable and academically integrated performance.
