Magnetic nanoparticles have applications in advanced permanent magnets, magnetic recording media, magnetic fluids as well as in biotechnology. Production of hard magnetic nanoparticles of SmCo5, Sm2Co 17 and Nd2Fe14B has been and still is an open challenge. In this study, an attempt has been made to prepare hard and soft magnetic nanoparticles by ball milling. Several hard and soft magnetic materials have been investigated including SmCo5, Sm2Co17 , Nd2Fe14B, BaFe12O19, Fe, Co, and FeCo. Effect of surfactants on the nanoparticle formation and dispersion during ball milling has been investigated. Interesting experimental findings related to the particle size, shape, composition, and magnetic properties have been observed. Elongated rod-like nanoparticles were obtained by milling SmCo5, Sm2Co17, Nd2Fe14B, and Co materials which are important for fabrication of anisotropic nanostructured magnets.
