摘要

This thesis overviews the procedures and findings of a project, funded by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), consisting of load rating all of the existing concrete culverts in Tennessee and performing a parametric study on said culverts. Currently, many of these culverts are in poor condition and need to be evaluated for their structural capacity. Furthermore, federal regulations now require that all transportation highway structures be load rated for their live load carrying capacity. The culverts were obtained from TDOT's library of standard drawings. Over 1,000 standard culvert drawings were received, modeled and load rated. Many of the culverts rated low for shear in the top and bottom slabs but with the results from previous research this does not cause great concern. It was found that slab culverts generally rated higher than similarly sized box culverts. Fill depth was found to have the greatest impact on rating factors while the culvert dimensions did not seem to have any correlation with the rating factors. One of the main objectives of this research was to develop rating aids such as rating tables and structural rating models for the evaluation of concrete box culverts in Tennessee. Two Excel spreadsheet documents were created to store and organize all the rating factors calculated. These rating aids will greatly benefit the bridge evaluators who use them to continue the work of rating the culverts in Tennessee. At the end of this research there are a few recommendations for future work. First, it is recommended that more work be done on shear in culverts. Second, alternate live loads could be investigated for culverts that had low rating factors. Third, alternate formats for the rating aids could be explored.
