摘要

Early narrative cinema developed to mimic written narrative forms. Because of this tendency and because of its institutional proximity to the study of literature, in the early years film was not given the sort of intense critical scrutiny it warranted as a newly emerging art form. The study of film adaptations was, predictably, even more marginalized and was caught up in relatively unproductive and qualitative comparisons across forms that did little more than record differences between the story on the page and the story on the screen. More critical attention needs to focus on the process of film adaptation.; Using the English-language film versions of Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris: 1482, my dissertation examines the ways in which material and sociohistorical pressures come to bear on the ways in which adaptations are both made and received. The analysis sums up work-to-date on adaptation studies and suggests new ways of examining adaptations, specifically serial adaptations. By suggesting a number of points of entry into a more extended consideration of the area (for example, examining the changing representation of disability on screen), various methodologies are applied to selected adaptations and some important new observations are made about the story and how it has changed as a function of adaptation over time.; As a result of repeated adaptation and commercial expropriation, Hugo's narrative has been transformed into a modern morality tale that cautions its audience about judging by appearances. In its subsequent reenvisioning on film, characters have assumed more heroic traits and have begun to act more altruistically than in the original novel. Rather than Hugo's melodramatic social and political indictment of religious and secular authority, the story has become part of a larger project by restating the American Dream in which characters overcome obstacles by sheer will and good intentions. A far cry from Hugo's cynical novel, the story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been claimed by succeeding generations as its own and has come to resemble its dubiously optimistic recreators.
