Instrument development for the purpose of identifying and understanding the development and maintenance of eating disordered beliefs and behaviors is an area of psychology receiving increasing awareness. This awareness is due in part to the number of Americans affected by these disorders, and increasing health care costs. It is estimated that 5-10 million individuals will in some way be impacted by an eating disorder every year, with health care costs for treating these illnesses approaching six billion dollars per year (NEDA, 2005).; Due to the often intractable nature of these illnesses and the high mortality rate it is imperative that diagnosis and treatment begin early in the course of these disorders. The development and use of appropriate instruments is vital for the detection of these illnesses prior to attainment of a foothold in an individual's life. The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the psychometric properties of eating disorder instruments currently being used with children and adolescents, and an investigation of a new instrument the Eating Survey. Investigation of the Eating Survey consisted of assessing the reliability and utility of the instrument with an adolescent population.; Beginning in 1998 through the end of 2000, professionals at the Center for Change administered the Eating Survey (Hardman & Richards, 2000) to middle school and high school students. The Center for Change is an inpatient treatment center for women with eating disorders located in Orem, Utah. Eating Surveys were collected in several Utah and Nevada middle schools and high schools prior to education and prevention presentations in the schools. The Eating Survey data collected from the 1,828 non-clinical adolescent female students completed during this time were used for this study. Ages of the participants ranged from 14 to 18 with a mean age of 15.9 years.; A factor analysis was conducted which identified four distinct factors consistent with what other studies have identified. Since the Eating Survey utilizes polytomous response options, a Rasch rating scale analysis was also conducted to investigate the extent of eating disorders in this sample, item difficulty, and use of the response options. The implications for future research and applications of the Eating Survey were discussed.
