摘要

This dissertation examines the spatial relocation of Mexico's largest exporting industries. It highlights the geographical distribution patterns of the 'metallic products, machinery and equipment' and 'textile' sectors in the metropolitan areas of Chihuahua, Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Merida during the 1980s and 1990s. The research finds that throughout this period these industries have primarily relocated from the Mexico City manufacturing belt to other parts of the country. The geographic redistribution of export-related activity surveyed in the dissertation is consistent with the Krugman-Livas and Paelinck-Polese models of North American economic integration, both of which are also reviewed. The dissertation is based on employment data collected from the 1980, 1985, 1988, 1993 and 1998 Economic Censuses.
