摘要

This dissertation develops and tests three theories of military performance against the evidence of five asymmetric conflicts involving mercenary groups, including conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Sierra Leone. These theories include the constructivist Normative Theory of Military Performance, which hypothesizes that the course of asymmetric conflicts is primarily determined by the combatants' relative military effectiveness, which is itself heavily influenced by each combatant's military culture; Neorealist Combat Balance Theory, which hypothesizes that the materially superior combatant, whether in a conflict or battle, should always prevail; and Enhanced Asymmetric Strategic Interaction Theory, which hypothesizes that the course of asymmetric conflicts is primarily determined by how the combatants' military strategies interact. The study's findings indicate that the Normative Theory of Military Performance, and, thus, the military cultures maintained by the combatants in a conflict, provides the most plausible and consistently supported explanation for the outcome of asymmetric conflicts.
