摘要

This study quantifies the morphology of slow-moving landslides in the Eastern Apennine Mountains of southern Italy and explores how they contribute to local landscape evolution. Our results suggest that these landslides are influencing the morphology of the local landscape and impacting the local sediment budget. Through DEM analyses and field surveying, we identify 97 landslides located on the slopes surrounding two small, hilltop towns. For landslides that are assumed to be active, the cumulative frequency distribution of landslide area above 10,000 m2 follows a power-law relationship. The mean slopes of the landslides (22%) and the study area (23%) are within one standard deviation of each other, suggesting the landslides are progressively decreasing the landscape gradient. We estimate the erosion rate due to landsliding to be 0.36 mm/yr. In comparison with the range of fluvial incision and erosion rates measured in other studies in the Apennine Mountains (0.17 mm/yr–2.2 mm/yr), the estimated erosion rate from landsliding is low but within the observed range from other similar locations. An analysis of curvature data show that landslide profiles have local concavities and convexities, but overall profile curvature varies around zero. The profile form could be related to the lithology and processes driving these landslides, but we do not have a mechanistic model to support this idea. Landslide planform shape is well constrained regardless of landslide area, however, there are differences in landslide morphology that may reflect landslide evolution. We determine that landslide shapes with high width standard deviations may be indicative of older landslides that are more heavily influenced by fluvial processes. We also suggest that those landslides with high width standard deviations and low minimum to maximum ratios are inactive. Finally, variations in landslide aspect ratio may be indicative of landslide evolution.
