摘要

The principal objective of the paper is to address the tension between Arabness and Syrianess which led to the problem of legitimacy and political instability in Syria during 1950s and 60s. The United Arab Republic, which was the merger of Syria and Egypt in 1958, was the realization of the Pan-Arab dream. However, the subsequent dissolution of the UAR in 1961 by a Syrian military coup revealed the conflict between Pan-Arabism and Syrian nationalism in Syria which was the heart of the Pan-Arab movement. In this research, this period was analyzed under three theories: nationalism, weak state theory, and praetorianism.;The road to the formation of the United Arab Republic was the peak of Pan-Arabism while the realization of the unity was the beginning of the decline of Arab nationalism. The most striking finding of this research is that, even though there is a change from one pole to another in this period, still there was a lack of identity in Syria until the Hafez al-Assad period of the 1970s.
