This thesis posits Montaigne as a seminal thinker in defining midlife crisis as a literary construct. Using textual analysis of Montaigne's essays, this thesis argues that the essay genre essentially created by Montaigne, with its indulgence of digression, speculation and open-ended inquiry, was uniquely suited to advancing the perils and possibilities of midlife change as a cultural paradigm.;Using Montaigne's essays as a starting point, this thesis identifies and analyzes four basic elements of midlife change in the literary model that he popularized: retreat, the struggle with personal identity, a reappraisal of prevailing social values, and the emergence of a new self.;To consider this literary model's embrace by subsequent writers, this thesis also undertakes textual studies of the writings of John James Audubon, Henry David Thoreau, E. B. White and Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
