摘要

Consumption has become central to how Americans define themselves as citizens and as human beings. Various movements have arisen as a critical response to consumerism, offering both alternative practices and counterhegemonic ways of understanding ourselves as citizens. Marginalized by the mainstream media, these movements have made effective use of the Internet to promote their message and attract supporters. In this study, Mr. Dershem focused on four specific movements---voluntary simplicity, green consumption, AdBusters, and Christian resistance---analyzing the ways in which they criticize consumerist ideology and provide alternative models for their followers. Mr. Dershem surveyed the history of consumerism in America to supply an historical context and summarized criticisms of consumerism to supply an ideological context for the movements.; Voluntary Simplicity seeks to simplify the hectic, consumer-centered American lifestyle. Its adherents seek to live on less and reduce their environmental impact. Mr. Dershem surveyed the historical roots of simplicity, then critically discussed its basic tenets as represented by Duane Elgin's Voluntary Simplicity. After analyzing the Slow Food movement and a counterfeit form of simplicity, Mr. Dershem focused on the Center for a New American Dream.; Advocates of green consumption argue that consumers should redirect their purchasing power toward less destructive, more sustainable practices. Mr. Dershem summarized the basic principles of green consumption, analyzed representative green marketers, and considered criticisms.; Adbusters is an organization founded by Kalle Lasn to criticize and subvert the essential ideologies of consumer culture. It is best known for its series of advertisements that parody mainstream ads. Mr. Dershem analyzed Adbusters' strategy and underlying ideology, focusing specifically on its parodies and "Buy Nothing Day" campaign.; Christianity in the U.S. has been co-opted in numerous ways by consumerism. However, some Christians have recognized the threat consumerism poses to their basic values and mobilized to oppose it. After surveying the history of relations between Christianity and consumerism, Mr. Dershem analyzed a variety of contemporary Christian critiques of consumerist values and related ideologies.; In addition to concluding remarks, Mr. Dershem considered the case of China and the place of consumerism in Chinese society.
