Although freestyle snowboarding relies primarily on the abilities of the snowboarder, the mechanical characteristics of the snowboard can affect the level of performance achieved by the rider. This paper lays a foundation for the study of freestyle snowboarding by determining the relationship of the characteristics of a snowboard to freestyle performance. To gauge freestyle performance, the ollie is used, which is the foundation of almost all freestyle maneuvers. An equation for the height attained by the rider is found using energy methods and the contribution of the stiffness and lengths of the snowboard are investigated. In addition, this paper proposes an engineering definition of "pop", which is a commonly used description of a snowboard's ability to spring the rider into the air during an ollie. Data acquired using the PhaseSpace optical motion capture system is used to analyze the dynamics of the ollie and to find initial conditions in order to verify the equations found in this analysis.
