摘要

The purpose of this dissertation was to gather data using an exhaustive archival case study method examining the past and present psychopathological status of John W. Hinckley, Jr., attempted presidential assassin. Specific attention was directed to his varied levels of candor and deceit evidenced in clinical interactions, interpersonal interactions, personal writings, interviews, and creative works. The impact of Mr. Hinckley's status of notoriety as it has affected his process in the mental healthcare system has been examined, and comparisons have been drawn between his particular case and the cases of others also found not guilty by reason of insanity and of those found guilty of similar crimes with the goals of gaining notoriety and receiving attention. Special attention was paid to the individuals he has expressed, both explicitly and implicitly, as having been influential in his processes; with particular attention given to those who he has directly aligned himself with, including (but not limited to) John Lennon, The Beatles, and the character, Travis Bickle, from the film, Taxi driver. Ultimately, a fully comprehensive record of the life of John W. Hinckley, Jr., from the earliest recorded accounts of his life through his present day quest for release from St. Elizabeths Mental Hospital has been established, gleaning new insights to his truly unique case, and uncovering new insights and information that might lend itself to the larger paradigm of those found not guilty by reason of insanity and those who commit crimes seeking notoriety.
