This study used self-efficacy theory to investigate (1) group support topics endorsed by people living with cancer (PLC) and caregivers of people living with cancer (CPLC) and (2) whether satisfaction with groups can be predicted by cancer status and other demographic variables. Data were collected from 3,723 subscribers of a national web-based information resource. The majority of the study participants were female with a mean age of 58. Over 90 percent were PLC and 10 percent were CPLC. Both groups combined represented 18 of the over 100 types of cancer.;Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the extent to which cancer status and other variables predict group topic domain preferences. Ordinal logistic regression was used to examine predictors of group satisfaction. Self-efficacy did not predict group topic preference or group satisfaction. Functional topic domains were rated highest among both groups and were associated with age, gender race and social support. Satisfaction with support groups was associated with participation in mixed groups comprised of PLC and CPLC having higher social support. The findings of this study underscore the importance for social workers to carefully select support group topics and to provide groups that include both PLC and their CPLC.
