Confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, and death are the adverse outcomes associated with hypoglycemia in the hospitalized patient. Nurses competent in the care of the patient at risk for hypoglycemia can reduce these risks. Research supports the effectiveness of simulation in increasing nurse competencies. This quality improvement project used a videotaped, simulated enactment of a case study to increase nurse knowledge, skill, and self-efficacy in the care of the patient at risk for hypoglycemia. Comparison between pretest and posttest scores showed an increase in the mean score from 80% to 90%. Comparison between pre self-efficacy survey scores and post self-efficacy survey scores showed an increase in the mean score from 36 points to 38 points. The results from this project shows simulation effective in increasing nurse competencies in the care of the patient at risk for hypoglycemia and the potential to improve patient outcomes by preventing hypoglycemic events.
